Oskar Graf (1944-2025)

Oskar carving classical neck

“The world has lost one of its most gifted luthiers.”

Oskar Graf designed and built stringed instruments for an exclusive and appreciative group of musicians since 1970. Oskar's extensive knowledge and dedication to his art were reflected in the creation of his guitars.

Raised and educated in Berlin, he apprenticed as a cabinetmaker and studied design. In 1968 he moved to Canada and after a short stay in Toronto settled near Clarendon, Ontario. Here in the quiet of the Canadian Shield he designed and built his home and luthier's workshop. Oskar started with simple folk instruments but soon moved to the more challenging construction of classical and steel string guitars. Oskar built over 500 guitars and is internationally known for his exceptional instruments.

His legacy of craftsmanship will live on long after his passing.

“This guitar must be one of the World's seven wonders... [Oskar Graf] truly deserves his status as one of North America's premier instrument builders.”

Don Ross: about his '95 Graf Custom 7-string acoustic guitar.  You can hear Don Ross on my 30th anniversary CD and of course his own recordings.

Hello Richard

I just learned of Oskar's passing.

Oskar was a friend as well as a superb luthier who built 2 guitars that i am lucky to take care of. Oskar's friendship and guitars have enriched my life.

Our friend Randy Jernigan and I visited Oskar this past July, a few days before the begining of the Blue Skies Festival. Oskar was happy and pleased with the voice that his youngest guitars already had.

May Oskar's guitars sing forever.

Best wishes
Joe McArdle
